In an impressive ceremony, a Pakistani diplomat received award here for the members of the Pakistani Mobile Hospital that provided outstanding medical assistance to the affected people of the devastated earthquake that hit parts of China on May 12.
The award 'A Carrier of International Peace and Friendship' was received by Counsellor Press and Cultural at Pakistan Embassy Muhammad Iftikhar Raja on the occasion of the International Week of Science and Peace held here at Great Hall of the People on Sunday.
The Vice President of the ninth National People's Congress Hu Qili while presenting the award highly praised the outstanding services rendered by the team of doctors and paramedics of Pakistani Mobile Hospital for the effected people of May 12 earthquake.
A 28-member Pakistani medical team comprising doctors and nurses rushed immediately after the tragedy and treated hundreds of victims in a field hospital.
Chinese President Hu Jintao paid a special visit to the camp of Pakistani doctors and lauded their performance. After a two-week stay, the medical team on completing their assignment donated all medical equipments for use in relief operation.
Pakistan was the first country that extended highly valuable support to the quake victims and the Chinese people were deeply touched and moved by the quick and timely action taken by the Pakistani side in provision of relief and assistance.
Recognising foreign participation in the rescue operation, the Chinese people found Pakistan as its most trusted and reliable friend coming to their help quickly and in a generous manner. The Pakistani gesture was a true sign of friendship and it proved once again that Pak-Sino friendship was time tested and mutually beneficial, as both countries have always reciprocated in the same manner at the time of need during the last 57-years.
The earthquake struck the Chinese province of Sichuan on May 12 resulting in the death of around 70,000, while five million people were rendered homeless. Besides, aid in cash, Pakistan immediately dispatched 30,000 tents as well as food, life saving drugs and other essential items.
Besides road, supply was also sent by air from Pakistan to ensure timely delivery of relief goods among the affected Chinese brethren. The tents not only provided by the federal government, but the governments of Punjab and Azad Kashmir also donated in a good number. A large number of Chinese through internet messages posted on various web-sites expressed their sentiments of gratitude for Pakistan government and the people for their timely assistance.
