The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to take strict action against people using residential houses for commercial purposes. The decision was taken in a meeting here on Monday, presided over by CDA Chairman Tariq Mehmood Khan and attended by Member, Estate Brigadier Asad Munir, Director Building Control Murtaza, Director Enforcement Captain Muhammad Faiz, Senior Special Magistrate Saqib Majeed, Director, Estate Management-I, Iftikhar Shah and Senior Director Public Relations Rawal Khan Maitla.
Senate Standing committee on interior chairman Talha Mahmood had asked CDA and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration to launch a crackdown against all restaurants, massage centres, schools and showrooms located in residential areas.
Considering the seriousness of the issue, CDA Chairman said that increase in commercial activities in residential areas was a serious matter, which should be stopped at any cost. He directed the concerned departments to take quick legal action, without any discrimination, against the owners of residential houses with commercial activities.
The process of legal action would be initiated against owners of the houses with showrooms and restaurants business on priority basis. The CDA Chairman directed that such owners of the houses, which are under non-conforming use, should be fined by CDA Deputy Commissioner and if the undesired and illegal activities at these houses were not stopped then to discourage the trend of commercial activities in the residential sectors, such types of houses be sealed by the Deputy Commissioner.
The CDA Chairman further directed Senior Special Magistrate to take action against the violators in the light of Land Revenue Act, including warrant of arrest and auction of houses. Tariq said that Islamabad had been established after proper planning. To keep the city beautiful and clean, the citizens should play their due role He urged the residents to cooperate with CDA and should not use their residences for commercial purpose.
It is worth mentioning that almost in every sector of the capital there are many houses which are being used for commercial purposes. After suicide attacks on some foreign restaurants housed in residential areas the government gave directives to them to either shut them down or shift to foolproof security zone. But the directives remained till documents as no practical implementation has been seen. The residential houses which are being used for commercial purposes are also creating problems for other residents of the areas.
