Consensus resolution: National Assembly Speaker constitutes committee to oversee implementation
Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza on Monday constituted a 17-member special committee of the parliament to oversee the implementation of consensus resolution adopted by the Parliament following in-camera session on national security.
The speaker disclosed this at a news conference few hours ahead of the National Assembly session, saying that it would be powerful committee to periodically review, provide guidelines and monitor the implementation of principles framed and the roadmap given in the resolution.
She, however, said that the decision to elect the chairman was left on the committee due to differences among the political parties. The committee has been given one month maximum time to formulate its own rules for implementation of the resolution. The leader of the House in the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani has been assigned the task to preside over the committee.
To a question about its Chairman, the Speaker said there were divergent views over who should head the committee. She said the committee would be empowered to hold public hearings and visiting the troubled areas. Fahmida Mirza said that the committee would hold public hearing as well as in-camera briefing where it requires. She said that committee would have the power to summon anyone for the briefing on the issue.
When asked whether the committee members would be authorised to hold talks with Taliban, the Speaker said the committee would perform its duties within the parameters and points adopted in the resolution by joint houses of the parliament.
The names of the committee members, which were announced by Speaker National Assembly, are Raza Rabbani, Babar Awan and Sherry Rehman of PPP, Ishaq Dar and Mehtab Abbasi from PML-N, Waseem Sajjad from PML-Q, Haider Abbas Rizvi from MQM, Asfandyar Wali Khan from ANP, Maulana Fazlur Rehman from JUI-F, Munir Khan Orakzai from Fata, Professor Khursheed Ahmed from JI, Abdul Razzak Thahim from PML-F, Aftab Ahmed Sherpao from PPP-S, Abdul Raheem Mandokhel from PMAP, Mir Israrullah Zehri from BNP-A, Shahid Hassan Bugti from JWP and Maulana Sami-ul-Haq from JUI-S.The Speaker, in consultation with the respective parliamentary leader, may change the membership of that party.
