Federal Minister for Human Rights, Syed Mumtaz Alam Gilani, on Monday said that an independent Human Rights Commission would be established to check human rights' violations in the country. "The commission will work at divisional, district and tehsil levels to monitor rights' violation," he said while addressing a press conference at Safma office here.
The minister said that HR's courts would also be set up at district level to award punishment to the violators of human rights. A task force comprising representatives of NGOs, lawyers, political workers, minorities and members of civil society would be set up to implement the decision of the HR's courts. He said that the ministry would also install complaint boxes at district and tehsil courts of the country to gather information and complaints of human rights violations.
Mumtaz Gilani said that revolving funds would be established for the provision of monetary assistance to the HR's victims. The ministry would finalise its HR policy before December 31 next to announce it on January 1, 2009, he added.
He said that PPP government has set up a separate ministry of HR to fulfil the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. The minister said the government, under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, was committed to protect rights of all persons.
To a question, Gilani said, "the ministry will not feel hesitant to take action against any official, landlord, industrialist or any other influential guilty of rights violation", he added.
Earlier, the minister distributed cheques for assistance among some deserving persons during a function organised by Regional Directorate of HR. Deputy Secretary Ministry of HR Khusdil Khan and Regional Director Arshid Muhammad Malik and other concerned officials were also present on the occasion.
