Stalwarts of Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam) from Khanewal, Vehari, Multan and other parts of the Southern Punjab have opposed the merger of the party into anyother faction or alliance and asked the party leadership to give up the idea of forming alliance with any political force and pay focus on retaining its individuality.
Sources revealed most of the party office bearers and ticket holders from two major districts of Southern Punjab including Vehari and Khanewal in the meeting on Sunday demanded party provincial chief Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to strengthen the party roots and pay attention towards the improvement of the party structure. The party loyalists also expressed the hope that party would survive if it was able to retain its individuality and proper attention was paid towards its organisation. Insiders revealed the meeting was attended by a large number of party members from the two main districts.
However, three main figures from Khanewal including District Nazim Ahmed Yar Hiraj, MNAs Raza Hayat Hiraj and Hamid Hiarj were not present on the occasion. When contacted, Hamid Hiraj, the brother of the Khanewal district nazim, told that he could not attend the meeting due to the death anniversary of his father.
The main participants of the meeting include MNA Pir Muhammed Aslam Bodla, Muhammed Yar Hiraj, Dr Samia Amjad, Ishaq Khakwani, Pir Shujaat Husnain Qureshi, former MNA Ghulam Murtaza Mataila, former MPA Imran Pervez, Abdul Razzaq Khan Niazi, Ali Khan Niazi and others.
Insiders stated the group of 'rebels' working in the party received serious flak from most of the party members for damaging the party. A source who wished to remain unnamed stated that the group led by Hamid Nasir Chattha working to 'occupy' the party and eyeing for the slot of president came under fire, both from the party members and the party senior provincial leadership present on the occasion. The sources revealed on the issue of party's future line of action, most of the members rejected the idea of forming alliance with any party, which was put forward by a few elected members.
Pir Muhammed Aslam Bodla, the party MNA from District Khanewal who had also voted for Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential polls of September 6 on the occasion suggested that it was the right time for the party to join hands with any major political force as in this way party could stand on its feet again. He said the current situation of the country also demanded the alliance of political forces to take the country out of crisis.
However, the idea was not welcomed by a majority of members present on the occasion, which suggested joining hands with any party would not bring forth any good news for the PML-Q. They said the party still had the capable leadership and the party could also survive with its available support. The members also demanded the silence prevailing in the party ranks should come to an end and the leadership should work with more fervour for the party reorganisation.
Former MNA Ghulam Murtaza Metla from Khanewal said at the moment the focus should be in uniting the party and joining hands with another party would not be right idea. The sources said the idea of former party MNA was also supported by Pir Shujaat Husnain Qureshi of Mian-Chunnu, MPA Dr Samia Amjad, former MPA Imran Pervez and most of the other members from the two districts. Party's provincial chief Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on the occasion also criticised the revolt group for creating rifts within the party.
