Four dengue deaths have been reported so far in Lahore while the number of virus-infected patients is increasing fast. The authorities concerned have not taken up to the mark measures to tackle the diseases. Taking exception to the increasing number of dengue fever cases, the Punjab Chief Minister, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has formed a Task Force.
The Task Force will execute all necessary administrative and financial powers and work on war footing to save the citizens from the curse of deadly virus. Dr Asad Ashraf MPA will head the task force, which will be comprised of assembly members and officers of the concerned departments. The task force will purchase necessary equipment and machines within next 72 hours and initiate spray in the affected areas to control dengue virus. The CM has also ordered immediate suspension of the District Officer (Health) Lahore for failing to curb dengue virus by taking required measures.
Shahbaz said on Monday that the task force will have his powers as well as that of the Secretary Health and DCO and will be fully authorised to purchase whatever machinery, can take all necessary measures to save people from the virus.
He said that growing rate of dengue cases in Lahore and other cities is a matter of grave concern. 'I deplorable that neither timely measures were taken to curb the disease, nor any effort was made to promote public awareness on preventive measures', he said.
Further, he said that carelessness and negligence have caused are the major causes of recurrence of dengue outbreak. 'It is regrettable that no proper arrangements have been made to conduct anti-virus spray in the affected areas. the extent of inefficiency can be judged from the fact that the EDO Health had only 10 fogging machines for the whole city whereas, at least 270 machines were required but, he did not put efforts for purchase of more machines,; he said.
Further, he said that an amount of only Rs 1-1.2 million was required for spray pumps but the person did not show his responsibility. Addressing a high-level meeting held to review the measures to eradicate dengue and polio on Monday, Shahbaz said that the life of every citizen is precious to him and he is ready to make available all out resources for this purpose.
He said, those showing carelessness, would not be spared. Furthermore, Shahbaz directed the Secretary Health to visit Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and othr cities immediately and submit a report in 72 hours regarding dengue fever and polio.
He issued warning to DG Health Services and directed to evolve a comprehensive strategy for eradication of dengue and polio from the province. Shahbaz also directed to purchase polio vaccines only from Unicef in future instead of private contractors and federal government should be approached for this purpose, while proper arrangements should be made for storage of polio vaccine. He asked principals of medical colleges and medical superintendents of hospitals not to hide facts about dengue virus and polio and provide correct information to media in this regard.
