Syed Asad Haider Mashhadi and Imtiaz Ahmed Chaudhry were elected unopposed as president and vice president of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) respectively besides uncontested election of 22 Executive Committee members of the chamber including two women members.
The election was scheduled on Tuesday, but no opposite candidate has filed nominations to contest elections and the Election Committee declared all 22 candidates and two office bearers successful unopposed.
It was for the first election of the RCCI after promulgation of Trade Organisations Ordinance (TOO) 2007 and in spite of three office bearers there will be two including President and Vice President. Two women members were also elected for Executive Committee under TOO-2007. Two women members of Executive Committee were Fareeha Najam and Amna Saleem.
Other 22 members of the Executive Committee who returned unopposed were Omar Farooq MaliK, Mohammad Imtiaz Chowdhry, Zahid Latif Khan, Sajid Mumtaz Khan, Hassan Ahmed Ozgen, Rizwan Ejaz, Mohammad Khalid Farooq Qazi, Chaudhry Pervaiz Ahmed Warriach, Zafar Jamal, Rashid Waien, from Corporate sector and Muhammad Alam Chughtai, Abdul Qudoos, Syed Zahid Hussain Kazmi, Azfar Kamal, Mohammad Afzal Malik, Tahir Taj Bhatti, Sanaullah, Syed Imtiaz Ali Shah, Kashif Riaz, Syed Asad Haider Mashadi from Associate members.
The Chamber has 22-member strong Executive Committee and according to Memorandum and Article of Association of the Chamber half of the Executive Committee members (11 members) will retire by the end of 2009. Addressing the members of the Chamber, President Asad Mashahadi stressed the need of united efforts to bring country out of the present economic crisis.
"Business community has to play great role in this turmoil and I am sure that we will do it for the sake of country", he added. Asad condemned the arrest of KKI owners saying that the matter was mishandled by the government. "We are in touch with other chambers and shortly we will evolve a strategy on this important issue," he added. He said that RCCI would continue its efforts for industrialisation in Rawalpindi region to quell the unemployment and poverty besides improving the living standard of masses.
Moreover, he said that he would utilise the platform of chamber for introducing the products of the industrialists of the chamber to international market. Besides industrial products, chamber would promote the agriculture products as well. President RCCI Rauf Chaudhry and Group Leader Mian Pervaiz Aslam also addressed the gathering. The new body will assume charge after Annual General Meeting of the Chamber to be held on November 22.
