Sindh Minister for Industries and Commerce, M.A. Rauf Siddiqui has assured business community that proper investigation and justice will be done in moneychanger's case. Replying to objections on presenting the businessman in handcuffs before media and treating him as a criminal during a meeting of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Tuesday.
The minister also expressed concern over handcuff and said that until and unless a person is proved guilty in court he is innocent in the eyes of law. He said that the moneychangers' case will be investigated properly and if they are found guilty they will be punished. It is the responsibility of those who made the allegations to prove charges in the court, he added.
Replying a question about load- shedding and power tariff, he said that the government is well aware of power problems and making all-out efforts to overcome them in shortest possible time. Regarding power tariff, he said that the issue related to federal government and hoped that the issue will be resolved in consultation with business community soon.
He advised allottees of plots in balloting held in May this year to establish small industrial units and start construction otherwise allotments of plots will be cancelled after lapse of allocated time for establishing units. He also advised those who failed to get plots in the balloting to contact authorities for refund of deposited money with interest.
The minister said that two banks namely Habib Bank and Askari Bank have collected applications for allotment of plots. Askari Bank has agreed to refund deposit with interest, while negotiation with Habib Bank is in progress.
Replying a question about ban on polyethylene bags, he said that the ban was imposed to save clogging of sewerage lines. They are a health hazard, he also want to keep the city clean.
He pointed out that some unscruplous persons intentionally threw polyethylene bags in sewerage lines. He said that the city Nazim was holding meetings with all the stakeholders and hoped that the issue will be resolved amicably.
Welcoming the guests, President KCCI, Anjum Nisar expressed concern over presenting businessmen before media in handcuffs. He said that the chamber never supported any criminal. However, the accusation of businessmen involved in transferring huge foreign exchange out of Pakistan illegally is only an allegations and not so for proved in any court of law. He said that arresting businessmen, banning polyethylene bags rendering large number of people unemployed, power crises, power and gas tariff issues are sending negative signals to local as well as foreign investors and scaring away the foreign buyers.
