Pakistan Peoples Party, Punjab, has set the activities relating to foundation day celebrations followed by the martyr day of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as a litmus test for the party leadership in the province, with a warning that those showing poor performance will be removed from the party offices.
A meeting of the provincial executive council held on Tuesday with Punjab PPP President Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan in the chair, discussed in detail the party organisation issues, besides brainstorming the activities of the foundation day celebrations and martyr day commemorations of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
It further shows that the provincial party leadership has deferred its axe on inactive party office-bearers throughout the province and preferred to extend another, probably the last chance before brining in new batch of leadership to revamp the party in a province with 60 percent population of Pakistan and where the party is losing ground fast.
Talking to media after presiding over the meeting, Rana Aftab said the party would "change" those from among the party office-bearers who were inactive. "Only those will survive, who are active and ready to serve the party interests," he said.
According to him, the party members of Parliament (MPs) will be bound to operate through organisational set up in their respective districts. They will further be asked to organise open courts, reports of which would be sent to the party Chairman in the first week of every month.
Rana Aftab further disclosed that both the presidents of Peoples Student Federation and PPP Farmers Wing had relinquished their offices to let the new faces in place. "Both PSF President Khalid Nawaz Bobby and President of Farmers wing Haji Afzal Chan have given up their offices for what the party is thankful to them," he said.
The replacements for both the offices were being shortlisted and would be sent to the Chairman for his approval, added Rana Aftab. He further said a media committee was also being formed to develop positive liaison with the media and sustainability of the committee members would depend on their performance.
Regarding power sharing with Pakistan Muslim League (N) in Punjab, Rana Aftab said the coalition would sail smooth until both sides respected each others' share under the power sharing formula. He said the meeting also eulogised President Asif Ali Zardari for arranging in-camera session for the MPs and reinstatement of 11,000 employees, shunted out during 1994-1996.
He said tribute was also paid to the previous leadership of Punjab, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi as President and Ghulam Abbas as Secretary General. The executive council meeting was also attended by Ghulam Abbas, Abdul Qadir Shaheen, Aurang Zeb Barki, Malik Hafeez, Raja Riaz, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed and Sarwar Abbas.
