LONDON: England were 182 for four against South Africa at tea on the first day of the first Test at Lord's on Thursday after winning the toss.
Joe Root, the new England captain, was 79 not out and vice-captain Ben Stokes 52 not out, with their unbroken stand worth 106 runs.
England got through the session without losing a wicket having been reduced to 82 for four at lunch.
This is the first of a four-Test series.
