GCU convocation held

Punjab Governor, Salman Taseer has said that decision of not sending the Director General, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) to India was in the best interest of the country. He was talking to media personnel on the seventh convocation of the Government College University (GCU) on Saturday.
When asked about the dissolution of the National Security Council, he said that the Prime Minister had taken the decision in this regard. He also said that there was no truth in the rumours about the dissolution of the provincial assembly.
Earlier, in his address, Punjab Governor said that all the societies develop on the basis of good education and no country can prosper and progress without maintaining the standards of education.
'We should follow the teachings of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal,' he said. On behalf of the Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, he further announced that the government would fund the expenditure of all the on going development projects at GCU and Kala Shah Kaku campus.
The Vice Chancellor, GCU, Dr Khalid Aftab said, 'We have witnessed many unusual events in recent months happening inside and around our country, which have started sapping the vitality of the society and set it on a downhill course.' He further stated that vitality of a society is to be judged from the way it builds up a vision for itself and regularly rejuvenates the system with a fresh vigour.
The atmosphere of enquiry and tolerance for diverse viewpoints on issues, provide the very basis of vitality of a society and what ensures the emergence of a 'vitality enriched society' are the fresh ideas that come from a genuine educational institution of higher learning like the GCU, Lahore. The crucial role of such institutions is to produce persons with imagination and feelings and the rest follows automatically.
The VC further said that the GCU now offers various courses, including a number of new subjects at different levels. At undergraduate level, the University offers BA, BSc 4-Year (Hons) degree programme in 20 disciplines of Science and Technology, Arts, Social Sciences and Languages. Further, the GCU also offers BS in Computer Science, BSc Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications and BSc in Applied Management.
At the postgraduate level, the University offers MBA, EMBA, MSc Telecommunications, MPhil, MS and PhD degrees in 27 disciplines in a highly research-conducive environment. Dr Khalid said that as many as 834 degrees were awarded in various disciplines including MSc 378, MPhil 163, MS 23, MBA 34, EMBA 10, MA 110, BSc & BCS (Hons) 42, 55 and, PhD 19 respectively in the convocation. Earlier, the Chancellor of the University and Governor Punjab, Salman Taseer and the VC GCU, Lahore, Dr Khalid Aftab awarded Medals and degrees to successful students.
