Barclays Bank Pakistan has announced its commitment to support schools established by The Citizens Foundation (TCF) - a non-profit organisation in Pakistan providing affordable quality education through 530 school units in urban slums and rural areas across 63 towns and cities.
An announcement here on Monday said that the project will fund Rs 4.65 million for school operations of one TCF school each in Karachi and Lahore, one computer lab and 20 libraries in various TCF schools across Pakistan. The funds will be utilised during the year 2008-09 and will directly benefit 5,145 TCF students.
Commenting on the project, Mohsin Nathani, Managing Director and Country Head, Barclays Bank Pakistan said: 'We at Barclays are conscious of our social responsibilities in giving back to the communities in which we operate. The assistance extended towards TCF is based on our vision of empowering the youth to become self-reliant and we believe that basic education forms the foundation for this cause'.
Sharing his views on this partnership, Mushtaq Chhapra, one of the TCF Founding Directors, said: 'TCF was founded 12 years ago with a vision to create agents of positive social change from within Pakistani society. With renowned donors such as Barclays, we are funding the education and holistic development of 65,000 TCF students enrolled across Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. We hope to continue working with our donors to help make education a right and not a privilege for the children of Pakistan'.
The schools being supported by Barclays through this project include a TCF secondary school in Karachi which lies in a Katchi Abadi called Sarhindi Goth, near Shah Faisal Town. The residents of the locality are primarily manual labourers commuting to industrial areas, earning at maximum Rs 4,000 a month. The Lahore project will fund the operations for a TCF primary school.-PR
