Like all parts of world, International Day of Disabled Persons will also be observed in the country on Wednesday (December 3) with an aim to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
This year the day is being celebrated with theme, "Dignity and Justice for all of us". Dignity and justice are embodied in the civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights promoted by the convention. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a time to make a renewed commitment to the ratification and full implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol.
Around 10 percent of the world's population, or 650 million people, live with disabilities. The Convention promotes and protects the human rights of persons with disabilities in civil, cultural, economic, political, and social life. Eighty percent of persons with disabilities more than 400 million people live in poor countries and there is a strong link between disability and poverty.
In developing countries, 80 percent to 90 percent of persons with disabilities of working age unemployed and in industrialised countries it is estimated to be between 50 percent and 70 percent. The rights to education and health are also routinely denied. Ninety percent of children with disabilities in developing countries do not attend school, says Unesco. Approximately 20 million women acquire disabilities as a result of complications during pregnancy or childbirth.
