Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (Prgmea) central chairman Jamshaid Hanif has condemned the move of the custom clearing agents at New York seaport to organise clearance of Pakistan exported garment loaded containers from New York seaport by filing personal undertaking in connivance with NY sea port customs staff.
This has been done in violation of the established procedure whereby clearing agents can acquire cleared goods on filing documents indicating payment of value of the consignment to the scheduled banks through which the documents are sent to the banker/exporters, he said. Hanif pointed out that it is unfortunate that the above absolutely illegal procedure has been adopted by the clearing agents at New York seaport in the case of several exporters of Lahore and Karachi. The government of Pakistan should direct the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington and Commercial Counsellor in New York to find out the background of the illegal activity as it will have serious repercussions as the Pakistani industry going to face big losses due to non-payment of export dues.
He said some positive measures to retrieve the huge amount involved in the transactions are needed, as it will loose foreign exchange of millions of dollars on the part of the exporters of Pakistan.
The chairman Prgmea added that some very urgent measures are required to be made to inform New York seaport authorities to stop the most illegal practice and efforts be made through diplomats channels to obtain assurances from the importing units through the courtesy of Department of Commerce, Government of USA not to resort such illegal practices, the statement added.
