Mexico joins meat label trade dispute with US

Mexico is joining a trade dispute launched by Canada against the United States over new US rules requiring country-of-origin labels on meat sold in the United States, a Mexican diplomat said on Thursday. Mexico submitted a request for consultations with the United States - the first stage in a dispute at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) - on Wednesday, following a similar move by Canada this month.
"We requested consultations. We submitted the request last night," the diplomat said. A document on the WTO website said Mexico wanted to join the consultations requested by Canada because of its substantial interest in the dispute owing to increasing trade between Mexico and the United States.
