Faisalabad Divisional Commissioner Zahid Saeed has said that under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, special measures have been initiated to ensure the provision of canal water at the tail ends of the canals and distributaries in the division, and a vigorous campaign has also been launched to curb the crime of canal water theft.
He said this while inspecting the outlets of the Dijkot distributaries. He took serious notice of tampering of the heads of some outlets for water stealing purpose and directed the Irrigation Department officials and office-bearers of farmer organisations to take immediate measures for the control of water theft incidents in the area.
He said that canal water thieves should not be spared, and stern legal action should be taken against such unscrupulous elements. The Commissioner said that persons involved in water theft would not escape from the clutches of law even if they belong to any influential section of society.
He directed the irrigation department officials to utilise every possible resource for provision of canal water up to the end of Dijkot Distributaries during current season, and directed XEN, Development, to start the lining work of the distributaries during the closures of the canals. Under this scheme, 48,000 feet lining of Dijkot Distributaries would be completed at a cost of Rs 220.00 million, he added.
He also inspected the designing of the outlets and got its size and capacity of discharging water measured. He directed that any sort of tampering of outlets of water-courses should be repaired and defects should also be removed during the closure of canals.
He assured the farmers that equitable and fair distribution of canal water would be implemented by effective mechanism under the instructions of the Chief Minister. DCO Toba Tek Singh Ashraf, PIDA Member Zamen Amin XEN Irrigation Aslam Baig, XEN Development Riaz Shahid and members of farmers' organisations were also present on the occasion.
