The Federal Population Welfare Minister. Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said that strenuous efforts were being made to control the birth rate aimed at reducing population momentum in the country.
Talking to newsmen at Kotli Amir Ali in adjacent village on Sunday, she pledged that Sialkot district would be converted into a model district of the country by reducing the birth rate in a manner that it would serve as an example for other cities.
Under the programme, safe motherhood would be ensured in the country, she said adding that the government would complete the mission and vision of late Benazir Bhutto by resolving the health problems being confronted by the womenfolk in the country.
The Minister paid rich tributes to Benazir saying that the mission of the late leader would be accomplished at all cost and country would be transformed into a real democratic state of the world.
The programme would pay special attention to safe motherhood by providing adequate health services to the women during delivery, she said.
Keeping in view the alarming increase in population, there was great need of launching massive campaign to create awareness among the masses about the benefits of small family and effects of early marriage in the country, she added. 'Fast increase in population was creating accommodation, street crime, health, education and law and order problems and it is the high time that we should collectively work for controlling the population to ensure basic amenities for everyone in the country, she said.
Earlier, the federal Minister inaugurated the Sui gas project. Dr Awan speaking on the occasion said that the government was utilising available resources to provide basic facilities to the masses on a priority basis. Further, she called upon the people to constitute a committee for supervising and monitoring the pace of development work and development funds.
