Syndicate body being pressurised to extend Karachi University employee's service
The members of Karachi University (KU) Syndicate body are being forced by provincial government officials with political affiliation to accept the application for illegal extension in service of university employee while his due retirement is approaching.
Noorul Ameen, who is an active worker of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has applied for extension of service for nine years.
He was appointed as gatekeeper, a non-matric employee in 1977. According to his date of birth entered in his service record at that time he was born in 1950. It is stated that Noorul Ameen appeared and passed his matriculation examination in 1984 where he mentioned his date of birth being 1957. Now, as the administration of the university announced date of his retirement, he using sources at provincial government level, tried to pressurise the university administration, they said.
They said that he moved an illegal application to Deputy Registrar, KU Muhammad Abid to present his application for extension in the services before KU Syndicate. When he refused to move this application to syndicate body, he started movement against him, they said.
They said that the Deputy Registrar under government pressure moved application to Registrar KU Professor Rais Alvi and Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui and they were also pressurised to approve illegal application and to present this application before syndicate body meeting, which was held on December 06, 2008.
They said that majority of syndicate member strongly opposed the illegal extension in service and rejected the application. The applicant, Noorul Ameen, as per announcement will retire in December 2009, they said.
They said as the syndicate member opposed the illegal extension with majority and rejected his application, the provincial government has started pressurising syndicate members to accept the illegal demand. Many of them, after receiving sacking threats agreed to accept this illegal demand, they said.
They said that after issuance of services book, according to rule of the university, the employee is authorised to change anything in the service book within 15-days and according to Sindh government law, the change could be made within two years of joining.
They said that after the passage of 30 years, he raised voice for change in date of birth, which is legally wrong. If the university approves extension in his services, there are chances that in coming years other employees may gathered outside VC office and pressurise him over and above the law for their services extension.
When this reporter visit VC office to know the facts, the VC refused to talk about this issue and excused that he could not meet anyone due to very tough schedule.
Registrar KU Rais Alvi mentioned that Noorul Ameen had submitted his medical examination report before syndicate body meeting in which he claimed that he was born between 1950 to 1955.
However Mr Alvi stated that the syndicate body of the university is looking into the matter and would take decision very soon in this regard. He also denied the information that he was being pressurised by government officials to approve this application for illegal extension.
