NWFP Inspector General of Police, Malik Naveed Khan said on Wednesday that NWFP police have lost 154 policemen and got 522 wounded in fight against militancy and terrorism in 2008.
He was talking to reporters after addressing a function at Nowshera training centre to observe various firing and training demonstrations of the policemen being trained at Police Training College, Hangu, the IGP said that NWFP police had played a matchless role in fight against militancy and terrorism as 154 policemen were martyred and 522 sustained injuries during this process in 2008. Under the Shaheed police package, he said that free education, residential plots besides reservation of special seats for the sons of police martyred have been ensured.
Asked about the rising incidents of kidnapping for ransom in Peshawar, the IGP said the kidnappers have taken advantage of the situation as police had diverted its attention to fight militancy. He said that contingents of 1000 elite force are being trained with help of Pakistan Army to fight the menace of militancy and terrorism.
He said that 77 gangs of kidnappers have been busted while 515 persons involved in such heinous activities were apprehended. He said that Federal and Provincial Governments are assisting the NWFP police to protect lives and properties of the law-abiding citizens.
Asked about the recovery of missing Afghan diplomat and Iranian Commercial Attaché, Malik Naveed said that some important clues in this regard have been found. He said that few suspected persons in this connection have been arrested and the diplomat would be recovered soon.
The police chief said that foolproof security arrangements have been made for peaceful observance of Muharram. He said that meeting with the religious scholars of both sects have been held for sectarian harmony. The NWFP Police Chief said that they have ensured full co-operation to police for sectarian harmony and religious brotherhood.
The IGP said that four Aircraft would be requisitioned from the federal government for Muharram duties in which a shooter, cameraman and officer having geographic location information of that particular area will make surveillance in the most sensitive district of NWFP during Muharram.
He said that strong action will be taken from air against those who created disturbance and take law into their hands. The cameraman will make film of the processions in which the troublemakers and miscreants will be pinpointed. Malik Naveed said that Hangu, Kohat, Peshawar and DI Khan have been declared as most sensitive districts in NWFP.
He said that contingents of frontier police and frontier constabulary would be deployed while Army would be in stand by position during Muharram. The IGP expressed his full satisfaction over the high standard of training at PTC Hangu and hoped that the trainees would take full advantage of the training for enhancing their professional skills.
