Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda), All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma), and University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a comprehensive Energy Management System (EnMS) in Textile industry of the country.
The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Smeda Shahid Rashid, Chairman, Aptma, Punjab Zone, Akbar Sheikh and Vice Chancellor, UET, Lieutenant General Muhammad Akram Khan (Retd) on Wednesday on the UET campus.
The Principal Advisor, German Technical Co-operation (GTZ), Ulrich Stohr-Grabowski, Project Advisor, GTZ, Abbas Mehmood, Dean, Electrical Engineering, UET, Professor Dr Noor M. Sheikh, General Manager, Outreach, Smeda, Syed Iqbal A Kidwai, Deputy General Manager, Smeda, Fayyaz Riaz and Secretary, Aptma Punjab, Anis-ul Haq attended the signing ceremony.
According to the MoU, the three organisations have resolved to share responsibilities in a formal manner to execute the EnMS through an Implementation and Training Programme for the textile industry. The EnMS programme implementation presents a standard method for continuous energy efficiency improvement through a systematic approach.
Under this approach, Aptma and Smeda will pick up 20-25 selected companies from the textile sector in the first phase to start implementation on the EnMS. Baseline audits will be conducted under the guidance of local consultants arranged by GTZ. The data collected through audits will also provide a baseline to develop Energy Information System (EIS) as an integral part of Management Information System (MIS).
After successful completion of the first phase, this activity will be further replicated in rest of the units. Under this program, Aptma shall invite its member mills to participate in EnMS training and implementation programme involving Smeda and GTZ to finalise nomination and selection process.
The local consultants arranged by GTZ for implementation of EnMS will work in the selected textile companies through the joint co-ordination of Smeda and APTMA, who will also conduct an impact assessment to analyse and evaluate the energy efficiency improvements achieved through this program. SMEDA, Aptma and UET will initiate a joint Energy Manager Training Programme (EMT) for the professionals involved in energy management in textile industry.
