Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) organised its 20th Convocation on its campus Wednesday. 556 students participated in the graduation ceremony and received awards and medals, for outstanding academic performances and excellence. Renowned journalist and distinguished author of several books, Ahmed Rashid presented the Convocation address.
Rashid said in his address that Pakistan is facing many crises such as economic, terrorism and the rising tension between India and Pakistan. He said that LUMS students should play their role in bringing the country out of these crises because, they were actively participating in community development.
The students were politically and socially active, which they prove by taking active part in relief work for the earthquake victims in Kashmir, lawyers' movement and standing against the terrorism. He urged the students to make social activism part of their life.
About the recent tension mounting between India and Pakistan, he said that India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan share common values and doing business with each other for centuries. 'We cannot live in isolation and this region is the poorest of the world, we should work together for its prosperity.'
Rashid advised the students to focus on curiosity, inquisitiveness for the success because these qualities make a person alive and urge them to practice tolerance throughout their lives. Earlier, the VC, LUMS, Ahmed Durrani said that he would make all efforts to retain the high quality of the university. He said that he should focus on raising the standards of research and teaching.
'Your effort is needed for the progress of the country,' he advised. Later, Pro Chancellor of the university, Syed Babar Ali and Rector, Abdurazaq Daud conferred degrees upon the graduates and awarded National Management Foundation (NMF) medals to the graduates securing top positions in various programmes.
