The Supreme Court (SC) has disposed of 149 cases instituted 212 from December 20-26 to execute the process of carrying speedy disposal of cases and quick justice to the masses. Earlier, on December 15, the full court meeting of the apex court had resolved to adopt special measures to clear the backlog by expediting the process of litigation.
The SC is working even during its winter vacations, as the Chief Justice, Abdul Hameed Dogar has constituted benches in order to deliver speedy justice. The number of cases backlogged in the apex Court on 19th December 2008 was 17,309. As 212 new cases were instituted during the period from Saturday, 20th December to Friday 26th December 2008, the progressive total of pending cases as on 26th December 2008 came to 17,521.
Out of these, 149 cases were disposed of during the period from Monday, December 22, 2008 to Friday, December 26, 2008, which includes 106 civil petitions, 12 criminal petitions, three criminal appeals and 28 other cases. The number of cases in the backlog on December 26, 2008 remained 17,372.
