President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Tanvir Ahmad Sheikh has expressed his concern as the year 2008 is coming to an end which was a difficult year that has greatly impacted Pakistan 's economy and ordinary man.
The people using their democratic right elected a democratic government and kept their expectations high in respect of improvement in the situation of inflation, unemployment, law and order, energy prices & supply. However, the Government could not come up to the expectations of a common man.
FPCCI therefore demands an immediate decrease in the prices of Petrol and Diesel to their previous level. Increase in Electricity prices should also be slashed down, as the furnace oil price has been reduced from Rs 66000 per ton to Rs 23000 per ton. Similarly, the mark up rates should also be reduced by 2 per cent and in future should further be reduced by 2 per cent after every three months.
These measures will provide relief to the poor people who are passing through a very difficult time for the past several years due to inflation. They will also have a positive effect on industrial units and its activity and thereby increase the growth rate. The sick industrial units will also start working and generating employment. FPCCI demands from the Government to announce the following measures to strengthen the economic activity, which will help in raising the standard of a common man and achieving export targets:
Petrol and Diesel prices should be fixed to Rs 48/ltr from January 1, 2008. The recent increase in electricity tariff should be withdrawn. Bank mark up rate should be slashed down by 2 per cent and further by 2 per cent in March and June 2009. Power generation should be increased as promised by the government in order to get rid of the menace of load shedding by 2010.-PR
