Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh, Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak has said that Sindh police have arrested a group of five terrorists in a pre-Muharram operation, who was planning to carry out terrorists activities during Muharram-ul-Haram.
This he said while talking with newsmen in a press briefing regarding the annual report of Sindh police department on Tuesday. He said that Sindh Police have arrested 37 terrorists in 2008. The police have also recovered suicide jackets from the possession of terrorists, he claimed.
He said that law and order situation in the province of Sindh remained stable as no major incident of terrorist activity, suicide bombing, attack on foreigners has been reported during the 2008. Although the crime situation in the province in the first half of 2008 was not steady, but therefore due to effective counter measures the crime situation significantly improved during the second half of 2008, he said.
Reminding the actions taken by Sindh police, he said that due to pro-active policing, Sindh police was able to smash four terrorist groups during 2008 who had planned to carry out suicide bombing in Karachi. Consequently, six terrorists belonging to Jihadi Organisations were killed and 37 terrorists were arrested in different police encounters, he said.
He said that a substantial number of high explosives, including 28 detonators, 40 hand grenades, 32 sophisticated arms, 38 rockets, 05 suicide jackets, 12 live bombs were also seized from the terrorists.
Describing the major achievement of police department during 2008, he said just before Ashura-e-Muharram 2008, Sindh police with the help of federal security agency were able to arrest a group comprising of five terrorists who had planned to carry out massacre of Shia community on the eve of 9/10th Muharram by mixing cyanide in the Sabeels installed on the route of the main Shia procession.
He said that on January 19, 2008 terrorist group namely Tehreek-e-Islami Lashkar-e-Muhammadi was busted. This group had carried out killing of 14 persons between 2002 and 2007 belonging to minority communities including Christian, Ahmadis, prominent businessmen and members of NGOs, he said.
He said that on January 29, 2008, Sindh police department in the area of police stations Shah Latif and Landhi during two simultaneous encounters with the terrorists belonging to Jindullah group, killed Junaid and Abdullah while terrorists Tayyab Dad, Talha, Qasim Toori, Hamza and Abid were arrested in injured condition. In these encounters Police Inspector Asghar Ali Dahri and Head Constable Raja Tariq sacrificed their lives while SP Azad Khan and three Jawans sustained bullet injuries, he said.
He said that during operation against dacoits in interior Sindh, Sindh police was able to eliminate 173 dacoits and arrest 9,891 criminals in 2,577 encounters. Fifteen gangs comprising of 40 notorious outlaws involved in this crime were either eliminated or apprehended, besides seizure of huge quantity of arms and ammunition, he said.
He claimed that in Karachi there has been 40 percent decrease in overall street crimes. Cell phone snatching has been reduced to 52 percent and vehicle snatching has reported a significant decrease of 50 percent in 2008.
Talking about the Lyari gang war, he said that after deployment of police and Rangers posts in Lyari, the gang war has subsided and gangsters have been flushed out. Incidents of exchange of firing between criminal gangs and casualties have also decreased considerably, he said.
He said that after Lyari war, civic activities, business centres and schools are functioning normally. As a result of Lyari police efforts, 20 gangsters were killed and 49 arrested, he said.
He said that to control crime cases in the province during 2008, 76 policemen lost their lives, 176 were injured, 538 gangs were busted, 173 dacoits were eliminated, 9,891 dacoits were arrested, 2,577 encounters took place in province, 1,694 POs were arrested and 318 patharedars were also arrested in 2008.
He said that in penal action against police officials, the department has given major punishment to 1,204 police official, 1,093 police officials were given minor punishments and total 76 police order cases were registered against police officials during 2008.
