Italy's antitrust authority said on Saturday it had imposed fines totalling 1.275 million euros ($1.77 million) on nine gas and electricity companies for misleading consumers about their tariffs. In a statement, the regulator said the nine companies, including giants ENI and Enel, had launched advertising campaigns that could mislead consumers about the cost of their services through "incomplete, incorrect or false information".
The individual fines amounted, among others, to 260,000 euros for Eni; 250,000 euros for Enel Energia; 140,000 euros for AEM Energia and 110,000 euros for ASM Energia e Ambiente - which merged last year to form A2A; 135,000 euros for AceaElectrabel Elettricita.
