Bearish sentiment was seen on the interbank market on Saturday as the rupee fell by 15 paisa against the dollar for buying and selling at 79.15 and 79.20, dealers said. They said that importers were busy in forward buying ahead of Ashura holidays to meet payment requirements.
In NY market, the US dollar rallied to a three-week high against yen on the first trading day of 2009 after a strong performance on Wall Street encouraged risk appetite. The dollar also gained versus the euro, after data showed deepening recession in the euro zone and as traders deemed the euro's rapid advance last month was overdone. Thin holiday trading volumes may have exacerbated currency moves, analysts said.
