Firmness prevailed on the currency market on Monday as the rupee held its week-end levels at 79.15 and 79.20 for buying and selling against dollar, dealers said. The rupee managed to keep its level versus the US currency amid dollars' rising demand by the importers.
In the Asian trade, amid beginning session of the week, the dollar held firm near a three-week high against the yen on Monday as risk appetite picked up after Tokyo shares followed Wall Street higher on hopes for a recovery in the US economy later in the year.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee followed same path on the open market after holding its week-end levels against the dollar for buying and selling at 79.00 and 79.50, dealers said. The rupee showed further gain in terms of the euro, gaining 15 paisa for buying at Rs 107.90 and it also rose by 50 paisa for selling at Rs 108.50, they said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The rupee lost 10 paisa on buying side and 25 paisa on selling side in relation to dollar in Lahore currency market on Monday.According to the moneychangers, the dollar closed higher at Rs 78.80 and Rs 79.50 against the last week closing of Rs 78.70 and Rs 79.25 on buying and selling sides, respectively.
Similarly, the rupee shed its value against pound sterling. The pound was traded at Rs 116.00 and Rs 117.00 as compared to Saturday's closing of Rs 116.00 and Rs 116.80 on buying and selling counters, respectively.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee-dollar parity remained unchanged at the currency exchange establishments of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday. The dollar resumed trading at Rs 78.50 (buying) and Rs 78.80 (selling) against same last week's rate. It did not observe further change in the last trading hours and closed at Rs 78.50 (buying) and Rs 78.80 (selling).
Pound sterling resumed trading at Rs 117 (buying) and Rs 118 (selling) against same last week's rate. The British currency did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 117 (buying) and Rs 118 (selling).
