Kisan Board Pakistan (KBP) has urged the government to chalk out a clear and transparent sugar policy in consultation with all stakeholders to ensure timely payment to farmers. Kisan Board President Sardar Zafar Hussain Khan said here on Thursday that the sugar mills owners were trying to drag farmers into the 'zoning system', which might cause problems to them.
He said that the sugarcane sowing was reduced by 30 percent this year due to such negative tactics adopted by the sugar mills owners. He said as compared to last year only in Punjab area under cultivation of sugarcane was reduced by 300,000 acres. He claimed that millers rejected Indian variety 238 last year but were buying it at the rate of Rs 125 per maund this year. Zafar said that keeping in view all these problems a balanced sugar policy should be constituted in consultation with all the stakeholders.
