A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce was held at the Parliament House under the Chairmanship of Senator Muhammad Amin Dadabhoy to review the progress of the sub-committee constituted earlier to conduct a probe into fake trade organizations/chambers of commerce.
The Sub-Committee was headed by Senator Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, whereas Senators Muhammad Azam Khan Sawati and Shuja-ul-Mulk were designated as its members. Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Sawati informed that the issue to identify fake trade organisations is a serious one, requiring considerable time and effort.
He requested for extension of deadline to deal with it comprehensively. Amin Dadabhoy gave one month time to the sub-committee to complete its probe and submit a detailed report. The committee however directed the Director General Trade Organisations to submit details of the various trade organisations.
The committee also reviewed the performance of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). The Members of the Committee pointed out that the wheat imported from the Ukraine was reported as substandard and directed the TCP to ensure import of quality wheat in future. It also directed that a buffer stock of wheat, sugar, fertilisers and rice etc should be maintained to avoid crisis like situation.
It also urged the Minfal to give such minimum specifications of the commodities/ edibles to the TCP, which may not have a negative impact on the health of consumers. The committee called upon the TCP authorities to develop a corporate structure and IT based environment to ensure to transparency without compromising on quality.-PR
