The ninth Bangladesh parliament, in its inaugural session Sunday, unanimously adopted an obituary reference on martyred former Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, describing her as the 'leader of toiling masses' and respected politician of Pakistan.
In a resolution, placed by newly elected Speaker Abdul Hamid, the Bangladesh parliament recalled how Benazir was time and again ousted 'illegally' from power although she got people's mandate in polls. The resolution noted that she had suffered imprisonment frequently and was even interned in her house as she 'championed the cause of the people.'
The parliament noted that Benazir Bhutto was illegally forced out of power in August of 1990. It told the lawmakers that she was again removed from power unconstitutionally in November of 1996 although her People's Party got the people's overwhelming mandate. The resolution brought into focus in 360 words in Bengali language the life and political career of Bernazir Bhutto.
The parliament adopted the resolution unanimously when lawmakers of ruling Awami League, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party headed by Khaleda Zia and Jatiya Party of former President HM Ershad gave approval to it. All the MPs including Hasina, Khaleda and Ershad stood in silence in memory of Benazir Bhutto.
The Speaker informed the lawmakers that the resolution would be sent to the members of Benazir's bereaved family through the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry. Hasina had forged personal friendship with Benazir during her life-time.
