Rising trend was seen on the interbank market on Tuesday as the rupee appreciated by 10 paisa versus dollar for buying at 78.85 and it also gained 15 paisa for selling at 78.90 respectively, dealers said. The dollar was in demand but there were some dollar selling also which helped the rupee to look forward, they added.
Some currency analysts said that the rupee may move both ways versus the dollar in the coming days. Amid second session yen fell against euro and sterling as Tokyo shares rose and after the Japanese government confirmed a capital injection scheme to help companies seriously hurt by the financial crisis.
The yen had fallen the previous day after British bank Barclays said it would report a 2008 pretax profit and US data showed a rise in home sales, helping revive investors' risk appetite.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee gained 10 paisa against dollar for buying at 79.00 while it managed to retain its overnight level for selling at 79.50, they said. The rupee, however, could not retain its overnight firmness in terms of euro, losing 1.30 for buying and selling at Rs 103.50 and Rs 105.50, they said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee maintained upward slide and increased its value by 20 paisa on buying side while it remained unchanged on selling side against the greenback in the open currency market on Tuesday. According to the currency dealers, the dollar following increase in its supply, could not sustain and declined against the rupee. The dollar resumed trading at overnight closing of Rs 79.00 and Rs 79.50 on buying and selling sides, respectively. At the end of trading, the dollar closed lower on buying side at Rs 78.80 while it remained unchanged at Rs 79.50 on selling side, the dealers said.
However, the rupee failed to maintain its trend and depreciated its value against the pound sterling. The pound's buying and selling rates slipped from Monday closing of Rs 111.00 and Rs 112.50 to Rs 111.50 and Rs 113.00, respectively, the moneychangers said.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee showed an increase of around Re 1 against dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The dollar opened Rs 78.50 (buying) and Rs 78.60 (selling) against the last rate of Rs 79.50 (buying) and Rs 79.60 (selling). It did not witness further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 78.50 (buying) and Rs 78.60 (selling). Pound Sterling opened at Rs 110.90 (buying) and Rs 112.00 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 110.90 (buying) and Rs 112.00 (selling). The buying and selling rates of Euro against the rupee remained unchanged at Rs 103.70 (buying) and Rs 105.00 (selling) in both the sessions.
