The announcement by Minister for Overseas Pakistanis to facilitate them by withdrawing levy of surcharge on their remittances to Pakistan is late, yet welcome.
However, the Pakistan government needs to explain why they have allowed few tricksters and leading controversial members of the land grabbing mafia to defraud overseas Pakistanis of billions of rupees under the garb of housing schemes It is sad that a good institution, like DHA, has allowed its brand to be misused by what was supposed to be allotments through ballot by DHA.
This was a strange ballot where everybody who applied without any exception was declared successful. Such individual acts may destroy the credibility of custodians of state institutions. Overseas Pakistanis contribute the largest chunk of foreign exchange remitted to Pakistan, yet even they are being systematically defrauded by tricksters.
The President, PM and members of civil and military establishment need to act and be seen to act as custodians of a transparent system based on justice, equality and free from exploitation. Pakistan cannot afford any more jolts to this nation's already fragile state of affairs.
