World Health Organisation (WHO) would conduct third party evaluation of special immunisation campaign including polio launched during January to March 2009 in the Punjab. The Punjab Health Department had made a formal request to WHO in this regard.
A spokesman of the Health Department Punjab on Thursday said that 3rd party evaluation would be conducted from April 16 throughout the province and if any negligence/ inefficiency is found in this regard strict action would be taken against the officers/ officials of the health department of that district.
Moreover, the Principal PGMI, Professor Farrukh Zaman while addressing inaugural ceremony of two years diploma course in anaesthesia organised by National Maternal New-borne Child Health programme, Punjab (MNCH) at Lahore General Hospital, said the role of anaesthesia specialist in all kind of surgery is essential, as no surgical/trauma team is completed without them.
As many as 29 doctors from different district and Tehsil headquarters hospitals have been enrolled for two years diploma course. Addressing the ceremony provincial co-ordinator of MNCH Dr Sabiha Khurshid said that there was acute shortage of Trained Birth Attendants (TBA) and Anaesthesia Specialists in the province resulting our health delivery system is facing great difficulties. She said that besides teaching hospitals there are 76 THQ and 35 DHQ hospitals in Punjab where only 48 qualified anaesthesia specialist are available.
She disclosed that every year twenty thousand pregnant women died in Pakistan during delivery related complications which means that one woman dies after every 25 minutes. She said that it is a great challenge for the medical experts and there is a need to work for the protection of lives on war footing basis. While elaborating the anaesthesia diploma course, she informed that the participating doctors of the course have filled surety bond committing to serve for five years in the respective districts.-PR
