The National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, Lok Virsa will hold an exhibition of weaving entitled 'Tana Bana' from February 14 (tomorrow) to 22. The nine-day exhibition will feature the most authentic master artisans who have specialised in the field of weaving from remotest regions of Pakistan.
Besides master artisans, students from Karachi School of Arts, who have recently done their masters in textile are also participating in the exhibition with their khuddis. "The purpose of the programme is to encourage artisans to produce handicrafts using traditional skills, patterns and themes in an innovative way to ensure continuity and sustainability of these traditional skills," said Executive Director Lok Virsa, Mazhar Ul Islam.
He said "Weaving is not only a craft but a mystic tradition associated with Sufis, who used weaving as a meditational practice as it consisted in transferring cotton and wool into cloth that provided comfort and cover to mankind against heat and cold." The event will show that how traditional and modern weaving skills can be combined to create hybrid novelties of patterns and designs. It will also display the traditional 'Khuddis' (handlooms) with the unique traditional art of weaving khes, lungi, khatta, khaddar, loi, sussi, cloth for ladies kurtas, shirts and others in the artistically designed cultural pavilions.
