More than 475,000 plants and saplings would be planted during Spring Tree Plantation drive in Sialkot and Narowal districts. Official sources told Business Recorder on Thursday that under the plantation campaign, special attention would be accorded on bringing vacant land under new plantation in both the districts.
Special attention during the drive would be accorded on planting maximum plants and saplings along canal banks in the Punjab. During spring plantation drive as many as 90,000 plants would be planted on government land, 100,000 plants would be planted by Defence, 10,000 by government departments and 75,000 plants would be planted by private sector and growers community in Sialkot district.
In Narowal 65,000 plants by Defence, 75,000 plants by private sector, 45,000 plants on government land and 10,000 plants would be planted by government departments. The provincial forest department would provide the saplings of Acacia Nilotica, Bombax Ceiba, Popular and Cedrus Deodara during the tree plantation campaign in Sialkot and Narowal districts.
The Punjab government was making all out efforts for enhancing the forest acreage and for this purpose extraordinary step had been taken for motivating growers and farmer community that they should bring their barren land under tree plantation in their respective areas of the province.
Punjab province has only 3.1 percent of its area under forests as against required 25 percent of the area. In addition to this, the government in collaboration with the forest department had also started a programme for overcoming the pollution caused by the industrial sector through the plantation of Eucalyptus trees in the Punjab.
Under the programme, special measures had been taken for planting eucalyptus trees along with seasonal Nullahs because Eucalyptus plants have the capacity of sucking the water and this practice would help minimising the pollution load in the Punjab. The Eucalyptus plants are being planted in tanneries cluster for sucking up the stagnant water discharged by the tanneries, sources added.
