Collaboration among corporate entities is vital to enhance awareness and mitigate challenges pertaining to climate change by sharing best practices. For this purpose, Leadership for Environment and Development (Lead) Pakistan is organising Pakistan-Climate Action: Corporate Summit on Climate Change on February 19.
Talking to Business Recorder on Thursday the spokesman of Lead said that the summit will be a unique platform for corporations to come together and share their best practices to understand what different corporations in Pakistan could make to mitigate the challenges of climate change.
"Such a platform will provide information and direction to the corporate community about what can be done about climate change in Pakistan and the role they can play to respond to this challenge," he said. He said that in Pakistan there is a dire need to establish a platform where corporate sector could be gathered to share the best global practices and work together for sustainable development.
"There are many industries whose raw input is based on natural products like pharma, chemicals, fertilisers, rubber etc companies simply cannot afford to ignore climate change any longer; they must either begin planning or risk losing ground to more forward-thinking competitors. Putting it right, business simply cannot succeed in societies that fail," he added.
The corporate world in Pakistan has also started to create a sustainable business environment that strikes an effective balance between economic growth, social progress and ecological efficiency. But there is lot more to be done. No system can work in isolation as government, civil society, scientist and corporations all have their role to play.
The corporate world has taken the leadership in developing clean technology. Today, businesses around the world are utilising energy efficiency, co-generation, diverse fuels, renewable energy and other clean technologies to reduce their operating cost and increase economic output.
It is now abundantly clear that only investment in technologies, products and new energy infrastructure has the potential of shaping the low carbon future, beating climate change and increasing prosperity for all. He was hopeful that the corporate summit on climate change would help to bring in limelight all issues that are the major cause of the climate change and would come up with suggestions that would help tackle its negative effects on the corporate sector.
