US growers will plant 8.107 million acres (3.28 million hectares) of cotton this year, said a widely followed survey of growers by the industry group National Cotton Council on Friday. The survey indicated a cotton crop of 12.76 million bales compared with 13.04 million bales last year, the Cotton Council said. The group announced the figure at its annual meeting. In 2008, US cotton sowings totalled 9.470 million acres, the lowest since 7.926 million acres in 1983.
