Hectic political consultations are in process among three major political parties ie PPP, PML-N and PML-Q to reach an understanding for unopposed Senate polls in Punjab like Sindh province. Sources in the PML-N told Business Recorder here on Monday that the PML-N President Mian Shahbaz Sharif in his Sunday meeting with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani made clear that the PML-N leadership is determined to strengthen democracy in the country.
On the other hand, the premier said all the political parties must set an example by following the proposition of their respective electoral mandate through mutual understanding, the sources added. It may be noted that Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, the Senior Advisor to the Punjab CM, said in his Monday press conference that the PML-N leadership is mulling over the option of unopposed Senate polls. However, final decision is yet to be made.
The sources further claimed that the PML-N leadership on Monday held an informal meeting to discuss the option of unopposed Senate elections in Punjab. There are chances of unopposed Senate polls in Punjab provided all the stakeholders show maturity, a senior PML-N leader said. He added that there were some elements bent upon to create differences among the political forces for their personal stakes and hatching conspiracies. However, he said the PML-N leadership is determined to foil conspiracies of such elements by showing patience and political acumen.
Sources further claimed that the PML-N would bag six seats followed by three seats by the PPP and two by the PML-Q in result of fruitful talks on unopposed Senate election between three stakeholders.
Moreover, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Punjab Vice-President Malik Muhammad Afzal Khokhar MNA has strongly criticised federal government for its poor economic policies as it failed to provide any relief to masses and end their sense of deprivation. Speaking at a PML-N meeting, Khokhar said, "President and Prime Minister have miserably failed to restore confidence of local and foreign investors."
He said conflicting statements by rulers are spreading uncertainty in the society and despondency among the masses. He said, "Dejected and disappointed people are looking towards PML-N leaders Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif who have dynamism and vision to lead the country out of myriad crisis." Underling the importance of parliamentary form of government for the country, he said,"mere press statements and tall claims cannot help overcome problems confronting the country."
Malik Afzal Khokhar said incursions by US led forces in tribal areas pose big question about veracity of ruler's statements to protect sovereignty of the country. Criticising Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer for his immature and negative political acts, he urged President Asif Ali Zardari to appoint a serious person as Governor Punjab for the promotion of democracy in the country.
He said Governor has no right to interference in the administrative affairs. "The Punjab government is answerable only to people of the province after the God." He said politically conscious people of Punjab would not let Governor to indulge in such acts for cheap publicity. Appreciating initiatives taken by Shahbaz Sharif in different sectors to bring about revolutionary changes in the lives of people, he said nobody could find any fault in his policies and performance.
