The pro-liberation leaders and organisations have reacted sharply to the recent statement of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and described the recently conducted farcical elections in occupied Kashmir as irrelevant. Castigating the spokesman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference said: "Sonia Gandhi has no authority to overshadow the role of pro-freedom leaders," KMS reported.
"Our objective is to push for freedom of Kashmir from Indian bondage and no power can stop Kashmiris from achieving their right to self-determination." He said New Delhi couldn't deter the resolve of Kashmiris by bait of development. "Airport or rail can't compensate the sacrifices rendered by Kashmiri people. Our youth have not laid their lives for roads or development but for Kashmir cause."
Acting Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai termed Sonia's statement as ridiculous saying, "We don't need her certificate." He said: "Kashmiris have been fighting for right to self-determination since 1947, which has even been acknowledged by the United Nations. India is trying to uses elections as a tool to hoodwink the international community."
Sehrai maintained that India was denying Kashmiris their political, legal and moral rights. "It seems Sonia has forgotten the 2008 mass uprising for freedom. The sentiment was crushed by continuous curfews, killing and booking of youth on frivolous charges," he said.
Acting Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Bashir Ahmad Butt said that Sonia's talk about Assembly elections in the territory was of no relevance as the United Nations had in 1950s declared all such polls as null and void. "By inaugurating international airport and train services, Sonia didn't do any favour to Kashmiris. Developmental works are executed by our hard earned money which we pay as taxes," he said.
