The Karachi Chamber of commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to rehabilitated its water supply and transmission and distribution system on priority basis. In a report, the chamber noted that provision of civic service in the city is generally poor.
While an estimated 82 percent of households have a KWSB water supply connection, water is available to them only for a few hours every other day and in some cases not a at all. The volume of water loss is unknown but is estimated to be around 50 percent. Leaking network and variable pressure indicate that water within the distribution network is heavily contaminated, the report observed.
Moreover, poor sewerage networking and large number of undersized and broken sections has further aggravated the situation, as wastewater is being discharged into the storm water drainage network, it added. The storm water drainage system in the city has a poor network that is heavily encroached and extensively being used for the disposal of sold waste, the KCCI report said. 'The KW&SB should repair and develop the transmission and distribution system urgently to solve one of the basic civic issues of Karachi,' it concluded.
