The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has decided a total of 10,110 cases during a period of one year after formally starting its function on February 20, 2008. A total of 10,110 cases were disposed of during a period of one year while the backlog stood at 9,641 on February 21, 2009.
After its establishment, a total of 6,701 old cases were transferred from Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench which had been disposed of during this period besides, institution of new ones, Ejaz Ahmed Secretary to Chief Justice told APP.
"The prime focus was to decide the old transferred cases uptill 2006, besides, most important new ones," he added. Giving details, he said a total of 9,006 cases were decided by the single benches and 1,104 by two division benches.
The single benches of Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Aslam disposed of 3,808 cases, Justice Mohammad Munir Peracha 1,797 cases, Justice Syed Qalb-e-Hassan 1,672 cases, Justice Raja Saeed Akram Khan 1,037 and the former judge Dr Sajid Qureshi 692 cases respectively, he added.
He said first division bench of Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Aslam and Justice Raja Saeed Akram Khan disposed of a total of 641 cases whereas the second division bench of Justice Mohammad Munir Peracha and Justice Syed Qalb-e-Hassan disposed of 463 cases in one year. He said the disposed of cases included 42 election petitions, 15 relating to National Reconciliation Ordinance, bail matters, NAB matters.
A number of important cases which were decided include fixing of land acquisition period, bail matters of Maulana Abdul Aziz, Shahid Jamil former minister for state, owner of collapsed Margalla Towers, elections matters of various constituencies including NA-41 Wana, NA-28 Buner, NA-49 Islamabad and others, habeas corpus pleas over Dr AQ Khan, Dr Afia's extradition to US, pleas against number of Supreme Court judges, Presidential Elections-2008, presidential candidates, military operations in Fata, regularisation of dozens of contract teachers, lecturers, Munda Hydro Project, Northern Areas Legislative Assembly status, power tariff, petroleum products hike, load shedding, appointment of former governor of State Bank of Pakistan, promotion of senior police officers, Pakistani prisoners inside Afghanistan, Prime Ministers appeals against 2001 NAB cases, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao former interior minister's pleas against NAB, officers on deputations, increase in salaries of Capital cops and others.
