Lawyers in Karachi staged a protest demonstration against Supreme Court verdict to declare Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif ineligible to contest elections and holding public offices. The lawyers hold a protest rally, which was started from City Court Karachi (CCK) and marched through M A Jinnah Road and was ended at Karachi Press Club (KPC).
The participants of the rally chanted slogans "Go Zardari Go" against President Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari and Chief Justice of Pakistan Abdul Hameed Dogar.
Speaking on the occasion, President Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) has condemned Supreme Court verdict to declare Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif ineligible to contest elections and holding public offices. He said,
"Instead imposing governor's rule, the government should give opportunity to Punjab Assembly for electing new Leader of House (LoH). He alleged, "According to National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), corrupt politicians and bureaucrats were given shelter in the country while peoples involved in false cases like Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif were given punishment for not following directions of corrupt politicians."
"We should never expect neutral and fair decisions from the judges for provision of justice in the country who took oath according to Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO), he said adding that now it would be disclose to everyone that lawyers were struggling for the rule of law in country."
He said: "PCO judges were not only tried to change the political fate of Pakistan through Supreme Court verdict but also tried tarnish the mandate of 80 million voters participated in General Election- 2008.
He said that the lawyers would continue their struggle for the restoration of judiciary in the country at any cost. He said, "Now long march and sit-in is not only the issue of lawyers but also prove to be an important turn in the country's politics. He said that lawyers of SHCBA would observe complete strike till February 28 and would hold General Body meeting for devising future strategy.
Addressing the protest rally, President Muslim League (Nawaz Group) Wing and Member Karachi Bar Association (KBA) said, "We are expecting the same decision from Supreme Court. He said, "It was predicted in the last central council meeting of PML-N that President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief Justice Supreme Court of Pakistan Abdul Hameed Dogar were preparing plan to declare Sharif brother's ineligible for contesting elections and holding public offices."
He said that KBA would observe complete strike and would hold General Body meetings while courts would remain close on the second day of three-day announced strike. He said that lawyers belongs to KBA would also observe sit-in at M A Jinnah Road on Friday, February 26, 2009.
Senior Vice President PML-N Saleem Zia, Nehal Hashmi and other were also addressed on the occasion. They demanded Government of Pakistan (GoP) for abolishing governor rule in Punjab.
Meanwhile, Shah Nawaz Shani, a local leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has lodged complain at Jamshaid Quarters police station against Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif on charge of mutiny. Talking to Business Recorder, Inspector Sawan Akhund SHO Jamshaid Quarters police station said that police have registered complain against PML-N Chairperson on charge of mutiny and torching pictures of former Prime Minister of Pakistan and PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
He said that the complainant Shah Nawaz Shani was of the view that the protesting peoples tarnished sanctity of National Flag by torching Benazir Bhutto pictures because on background of the pictures is National Flag. He said that they demanded of President Pakistan and Prime Minister to take strict action against violators of the law. He said that the police have not registered FIR against Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif and decided to consult with legal experts for lodging case against them.
