The rupee failed to resist further slide against dollar on the interbank market on Saturday, falling nine paisa for buying and selling at 79.99 and 80.02, dealers said. The dollar maintained its climb over the rupee as importers were active to meet the payment requirements, they said.
In the New York market at the weekend dollar climbed broadly as a sharp contraction in the US economy, US stocks trading near 12-year lows and a new rescue attempt for Citigroup fueled safe-haven buying of the greenback. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen rebounded from sharp weekly losses as month-end and repatriation flows gave some support to the currency, analysts said.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee gained 10 paisa against dollar for buying at 79.70 while it did not show any change for selling at 80.20, they said. The rupee rose by 50 paisa in relation to euro for buying and selling at Rs 101.00 and Rs 103.00, they added.
