Israels ambassador to the United States announced on Thursday his decision to resign in light of a change of government in the Jewish state, a senior official said. Sallai Meridor recently told outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu of his decision, the official told AFP.
Meridor, who was appointed to the key post by Olmert in 2006, said he would step down after a new government is formed in the coming weeks, the official said. Livni hailed Meridors work, saying he is "leaving very strong foundations for his successor to allow the continuation of the strategic co-operation between Israel and the United States," her office quoted her as saying.
The announcement follows Israeli media reports that Netanyahu asked Meridor to leave the room during a meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
