Attack on Sri Lankan cricketers: Senate body criticises government over security lapse
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has said that March 3 terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore has drastically damaged the game of cricket, spoiling Pakistans image to the point of no return.
In its meeting here on Thursday, with Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed in the chair, the committee urged the government to investigate how such a serious lapse of security was given ample space when government agencies predicted in advance that such an attack is in the offing.
The committee stressed the need that urgent measures are required to fully investigate the terrorist attack on convoy of Sri Lankan team and bring the culprits to book.
The committee strongly condemned the act of terrorism, terming it as a crime against humanity. The meeting showed complete solidarity with Sri Lankan cricket team, people and the government. Meanwhile, talking to journalists, Mushahid said that PPP has set aside all the major issues the country is confronted with and busy in consolidating their stronghold on Lahore. The country is passing through a critical phase of history and showing immaturity at this stage will cause irreparable loss to the already reeling institutions, he added.
Commenting on the release of the kidnapped UN official John Solecki, he said that we appeal to the government to utilise all resources to recover the kidnapped official and hoped he would soon be recovered. "I appeal to the government and the people of Balochistan to release the UNHCR official as he is an innocent person and was here to serve us", he added. The abduction is the most high-profile kidnapping of a western in Pakistan, since US journalist Daniel Pearl was killed in custody in 2002 by al Qaeda fugitives.
