Chairman Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Asfandyar Wali has said that extremism and terrorism was threat to our society and also a major cause of instability in the region. He urged the West, especially the European Union countries to help Pakistan in resolving the root causes of extremism.
Asfandyar Wali expressed these views at a meeting of National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs held in the Parliament House on Thursday that was also attended by 10-member Danish parliamentary delegation headed by Gitte Lillelund Bech, Chairman of the Foreign Policy committee of the Danish Parliament.
The Chairman said that extremism and terrorism in the region was the outcome of the Afghan war. After the Afghan war, he said, the United States and the West left the area without resolving the aftermath of the war. He said that it was the responsibility of the West and United States to come forward and help countries in the region to remove the root causes of terrorism and extremism.
Asfandyar said that Pakistan was a peace loving country and believed in peaceful coexistence and it wanted peace with all neighbours and termed peace as pre-requisite for development and prosperity of the region.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman while briefing the Committee said that Pakistan preferred peace and resolution of problems through dialogue. He said that to end militancy in the region, we need to resolve the root causes of this menace. He said that dialogue was the only way to resolve issues. The head of the Danish Parliamentary delegation Gitte Lillelund Bech said that the issues of terrorism and extremism are common problems confronting Pakistan, the region and the world and needed to be tackled jointly.
She said that the whole world was concerned about the instability in the region and added that the legacy of the past should be left behind and we all should untidily work for better tomorrow.
Besides the Danish Parliamentary delegation, the meeting was attended by MNAs Palwasha Khan, Farah Naz Ispahani, Fouzia Habib, Mir Amir Ali Khan Magsi, Sheikh. Aftab Ahmad, Humair Hayat Khan Rokhri and Dr Muhammad Farooq Sattar.
