Taiwan opened a new port outside the capital city of Taipei Monday aimed at boosting the competitiveness of local exporters. President Ma Ying-jeou presided over a ceremony in Pali, in northern Taipei county, to mark the occasion. The port will operate two terminals initially and plans to add five others by 2014, targeting cargo supplied by exporters in northern Taiwan.
Managers say annual transport costs for the industry will be cut by more than three billion Taiwan dollars (86.21 million US) because the bulk of northern Taiwan's out-bound cargo will no longer need to be transported the 300 kilometres (180 miles) to the southern port of Kaohsiung.
