Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas, Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that private sector is playing a vital role for promoting the quality and standards of higher education and supplementing the government efforts in the country.
The minister said that country was facing challenges including low literacy rate and it is the fundamental responsibility of the state to prioritised education for a better future of the country. He stated this while addressing the 6th convocation of Muhammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU) here on Thursday wherein over 400 graduates in different disciplines received their degrees.
Qamar Kaira congratulated the graduating students on their academic achievements and expressed his appreciation for the efforts and contributions of the university in the field of higher education. He said that in the present day scenario, education does not end with acquiring a degree; it is a life long affair exploring new horizons and broadening of the vision, marching on a never-ending journey towards new frontiers of knowledge.
Speaking on the occasion, the guest of honour, Minister of State for and Advisor to Prime Minister for Science and Technology, Dr Ishfaq Ahmed highlighted the importance of science and technology and shared his views regarding climate change and its effects on the country.
"We are now faced with challenges of different types and it is the higher education which plays a key role in determining position of a nation in todays knowledge driven economy," he said adding, "It guarantees sustainable progress and assures a place of respect to both individuals and nations.
Earlier in his address of welcome, Executive Vice-President MAJU, Dr M Mansoor Ahmed highlighted the contributions made by the university in the field of higher education and earned a prominent position amongst higher education universities putting high emphasis on its graduate programmes.
Chancellor of the university, Mian Amer Mahmood awarded the degrees to the graduates while 22 gold medals including one for All Round Best Student of the year, 11 silver and 8 bronze medals were awarded to the graduates who stood first, second and third in their respective degree programmes.
The Jinnah Gold Medal was awarded to the universitys best graduate, Farah Zamir Butt who had a distinguished performance in both curricular and extra curricular activities. Later, President MAJU, Dr Abdul Wahab presented the vote of thanks.
