Balochistan chief minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani, who reached Islamabad on Sunday after being called by the Prime Minister, has said that the ice had started melting and the situation would improve in a day or two.
Raisani arrived here by a special flight for reconciliatory efforts to bring the political forces together for defusing tension. He was in Karachi and rushed to Islamabad after the federal government had informed him about the worsening political situation in the wake of PML-Ns refusal to sit across the negotiating table with the government. The PML-Ns participation in the long march and sit in has been noticed by the world community with concern and it is asking the government to do something to defuse the tense situation.
The PPP-led coalition government offered that it would file a review petition in the Supreme Court to nullify the disqualification of Sharif brothers. Raisani held a meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and discussed the situation arising out of the long march started from Lahore.
Sources said that the situation is going out of the government control and the President is being pressed to accept the demands of the opposition. There is likelihood that the participants of the long march would be allowed to the Constitution Avenue, the place chosen by lawyers for indefinite sit in for the reinstatement of deposed judges.
According to the sources, there is possibility that Prime Minister would play a major role to defuse the tension. Prime Minister is not a beneficiary of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO). He has no problem if deposed judges are reinstated. Some circles believe that Pakistan Army and the US have become guarantors, and they are likely to press the government over a deal with the PML-N in order to de-escalate tension. So far there is no sign of retreat from the Presidency.
However, the federal government suffered a serious set back when some officials in Punjab defied the government orders to deal sternly with the participants of the long march in Lahore and some other parts of the country.
There are some speculations that there is a serious rift within the PPP over the handling of the political workers. The die-hard workers of the party have started distancing themselves from the party due to its undemocratic attitude. Almost similar situation is with the Awami National Party (ANP). If the long march continues for more than one day, there is a possibility of serious divisions within the PPP.
