In his first formal interaction with media after assuming charge as Federal Minister Information, Qamer Zaman Kaira on Sunday said that government has no plan to curb on media, urging it to play positive role at the time when the country is passing through a critical juncture.
He also proposed forming a commission with the representation of all the political parties to resolve the judicial crises by taking all the stakeholders into confidence.
He was addressing a press conference in Press Information Department (PID), he also said that President and the Prime Minister have decided to file a review petition in the apex court after coming the detailed judgement against the disqualification verdict of the court against Sharif brothers.
The information minister said that government has no planned to curb on media and neither has ordered Pemra to disconnect any channel from the cable.
Media is playing vibrant and neutral role for strengthening democracy and creating awareness among the masses, he said. However, the information minister added that certain section of media is playing negative role and sought co-operation of senior media-persons for making judgement whether this section of media is doing in the line with the national interest or not.
Kaira said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has always remained supportive of freedom of press and would resolve the issues related to the media. To a question, the Minister said that PPP government has always been sincere as far as the Sharif brothers case is concerned as the federal government had become party on behalf of Sharif brothers by filing petition in the Supreme Court in June 2008 after dismissing of the petition by the Lahore High Court. He said that CoD is roadmap for resolving all the issues and all the political parties particularly PML-N to come forward to resolve them as per procedure enshrined in the CoD.
